Hurray! One of my a favourite records ever gets a reprint: “Sweetnighter” by Weather Report. Ideal for the car stereo, too, but I fear this Music on Vinyl reissue won’t be of help there, since MoV don’t include download codes. Boo hoo!

Just imitated this whole exercise at home, but ‘t didn’t sound quite the same – suppose it’s the Chelsea Hotel‘s acoustics ;-) … The artist at work is “of course” the criminally underrated David Van Tieghem, one time member of the Love of Live Orchestra and session percussionist for NYC icons such as Laurie Anderson, Talking Heads & Eno – Byrne. Here’s another sample of his early art:
Just like David Byrne with “The Catherine Wheel“ (1981-12), Van Tieghem recorded music for a dance piece by Twyla Tharp, viz. “Fait Accompli” ; the resulting album “These Things Happen” (Warner Brothers 1984) is, imho, one of the best albums of the eighties – and a lost gem in dire need of a deluxe cd reissue reappraisal. [If only for the car stereo – the lp has been working wonders back to back with Weather Report‘s “Sweetnighter” (1973) on a worn car tape.] Singling out one track doesn’t do this album justice, as it’s a plus forty minute trip of percussive genius (and compelling sax action à la Tuxedomoon, impLOG and the like) over a soundscape of sirens, breaking glass (love that sound, even though it makes me think of people pissing on the stairs), tv & shortwave clips and other New York noises … but here goes:
… or, better still, check the video at Spike dot com video/david-van-tieghem/2791971 (I’m splitting the link to avoid showing a black screen without value), where the video and the music are better synchronised. (Notice the “Once in a lifetime” influence, too.) “These Things Happen is a must for anyone into early (Ralph era) Yello, “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts” (1981-02), Bill Laswell, Martin Rev, Suicide and the whole No New York / Knitting Factory scene, but also to anyone into creative electronics and percussion … or remotely interested in modern dance – from Anna-Teresa “Rosas” De Keersmaeker or Chantal Akerman‘s “Toute une nuit” to the post-Godard video dances of Pas de Deux or Michael Clark‘s troupe dancing to Bruce Gilbert and the Fall … just check this other man in a suit here:
Later on, DVT would release more albums in an electronic / library / nearly new age vein, but never as intense. See the man’s age old website www.vantieghem.com for more.
Incidentally, re: Byrne & Talking Heads, see also this here post … ;-)

[uzine] used to be a music e-zine between 1999 and 2006, run by a threesome and then some (from the mid to end nineties, it was a webzine called ultra – hence the u -, run by (kf) & (hs) a.o. ). The e-zine (now defunct, don’t dream of sending stuff for review) had about 3000 subscribers and even more dedicated readers. We did interviews and reviews and provided the playlists of our radio shows (expect those here later on as well) plus a lot of links, favelists, best of the year overviews, etc. … annexed is the the whole shebang in a 2,6 MB zip featuring txt files and a contents pdf …
Incidentally, everything here is “for demonstration & (internet) conversation purposes”. This here blog will not be making any media files downloadable; such are our settings on this here Posterous platform. If they are presented here, the purpose is to promote artists by providing tangible examples of their art & craft, and to have you, o dear readership, become equally enthusiastic about the art on display, perhaps even tempting you to purchase it legally. As the financial crisis of 2008 has shown, we’re living in a consumer society (and a services economy, and an attention economy, and a spectacle society), so everyone has to be aware of and do what it takes to keep the wheels going (without harming the planet). Also, it is our intent to always provide direct links to artist or label sites, and to the sources we got our information or data from … as well as other relevant and informative links, cf. this site’s subtitle. Conversely (vice versa, mutatis mutandis), we hope to be quoted whenever material of ours is used, including all stuff from the issues of [uzine] contained in this here zip containing our own writings. Do contact us if you have issues or questions …

Update: since the switch from Posterous to WordPress, it’s no longer possible to offer a zip. Here’s the contents table instead, and an example issue. When there’s time, we’ll make a separate blogpost of each e-zine.
