im mr skin

RIP Ed Cassidy (1923-05-04 > 2012-12-06), drummer of Spirit … and IM Randy California (1951-02-20 > 1997-01-02) and John Locke (1943-09-25 > 2006-08-04). Cassidy was instantly recognizable by his shaven head (hence his nicknameMr Skin“) and his fondness for wearing black. He was around twenty years older than the rest of the group (born in 1923). His earlier career was primarily in jazz and included stints with Cannonball Adderley, Gerry Mulligan, Roland Kirk, Thelonious Monk and Lee Konitz. He was a founding member of Rising Sons with Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder.” Quoted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_%28band%29

daan’s belgium

What with Daan Stuyven’s “Het België van” documentary on VPRO (2012) getting praise, it’s time to dust off Didier Verbeek’s 2004 documentary for RTBf tv. It’s wonderful, and it’s also available on der Daan‘s Cameradvd + cd (2006-06). Below’s a link to the 2009 Belpop documentary on VRT (Canvas) as well. Let’s hope the VRT won’t move the link (from the Canvas site to the Cobra site) to yet another site. (VRT urgently needs to rethink its ramshackle online policy.) 2013-02-02 update: it’s out on VPRO dvd cf. http://winkel.vpro.nl/het-belgie-van

cane & able

= on French tv in 1971, at the Sacha Show hosted by Sacha Distel

Cane and Able were one of the many groups that came out of the collective surrounding the Lafayette Afro Rock Band in the early seventies” (author unknown, quoted all over the internet). Amazingly, Frank Abel is missing from the line up – one’d have thought the band’s name was a pun on his family name. Anyhoo, the band recorded two lp’s: “[Cane And Able]” (AKT 1972) and Relating A Message To You(Epic 1972), both via CBS France. They’re uneven albums but Who’s gonna take the weightand “Stoned groove” are deluxe. Sadly, the latter’s not online. So, what with le Tour approaching, how about this here Michel Fugain cover instead eh? Well, apart from the idea to approach translating Une belle histoire(1972) as “Be free”, there’s nothing much original about it. Still: régalez-vous!

beefheart’s dust sucker of a bat chain puller

= 1980 French tv (“Chorus”) … 2012-02-22: Vaulternative / Zappa records have finally released the original 1976 “Bat Chain Puller” album by Captain Beefheart. Officially. It’s outrageously expensive but it sounds much, much better than the unofficial “Dust Sucker” release by the Ozit leeches, said to contain the 1976 recordings as well, well … The title track’s rhythm is said to be based on the sound of Don Van Vliet’s Volvo car’s windscreen wipers. And the blues, of course. Webcore, webcore.
