feel that four letter word in a garden of delights

FeelspiritStrangefolk

Writing about B-Music dj Jeanette Leech’s folk book, I was of course reminded of Andy Votel‘s twoFolk Is Not A Four Letter Word” comps on his now defunct Delay 68 label (cat. no. 01 and 05, from 2005 and 2006 respectively + see my post on Carol Batton as well). Garden Of Delights (A Folk Compilation Selected By Pete Lawrence & AJ Of The Big Chill)” (Sanctuary DQFCD022, 2006) and Mark Pritchard‘s “Feel The Spirit (Other Worldly Folk Music Gems And Psychedelics)” (Optimum Sounds OPTCD002, 2006) were groovy v/a cd’s too, and Strange Folk (Albion / Apace STRGCD01, 2006) wasn’t bad either. Sadly, there’s hardly been any worthwhile folk comps since. That’s a five year drought! Hey and re: the last track here: see also Alasdair Roberts’ official and fan sites …

jeanette’s folk book

Jeanetteleechfolk

Jeanette Leech‘s book Seasons they change – the story of acid and psychedelic folk” (Jawbone 2010-11, ISBN 9781906002329) was originally going to have “experimental folk” in its title too, but it’s no less grandiose as it is – with a foreword by Greg Weeks of Espers and all. There’s more info (than on the publisher’s site, typically) via this Coptic Cat link … and for more acknowledgements and links click here (great concept, incidentally). Also, do check the third tab here for an interview with Jeanette. Finally, you can find la Leech’s folk faves here. Here’s some of mine, all culled from two excellent but out of print v/a compilations on the now defunct Sanctuary label: Gather In The Mushrooms (The British Acid Folk Underground 1968-1974)” (Castle CMQCD840, 2004) and Early Morning Hush (Notes From The UK Folk Underground 1969-1976)(Castle CMQCD1265, 2006).

For an expert review of the book (and another major folk resource), see http://www.psychedelicfolk.com/SeasonsTheyChange.html … though I disagree with the minor rant about Fairport Convention & Trees not being psychedelic enough…

annette peacock

Annette Peacock is the one but her thirty-one (thirty-one, thirty-one) albumette (31:31“, Ironic 2005 or 2006) takes way too long getting serious distribution … and a vinyl release! And what’s keeping other labels from rereleasing her early work as well? Anyhoo, by way of reminder of her genius, here’s two tracks off her 1979 masterpiece “The Perfect Release” (Aura AUL 707) to boot.

nick nicely stratosphearical

Nicknicelypsychotropia

One for pimply little postboys everywhere! Cycladelic I tells ya, and a huge influence on Partridge’s Dukes! Really love this early eighties sounding psychedelia – kinda reminds me of a cross between Grind“, Talk Talk and Duran Duran … with a whiff of Stephen Duffy. The four tracks below date from 1980, 1981 and 1983; Nick Nicely‘s “Psychotropia” compilation was first released in 2004 by Sanctuary (cd) and Tenth Planet (lp), and now it’s been reissued by Grapefruit (via Cherry Red, 2010). Update #1: there’s a more recent vinyl lp on Captured Tracks: Elegant Daze(CT-126, 2011-11-29), while Fruits de Mer have released a 7″ with both a new and the original version of Hilly Fields(cat. no. Crustacean 27, 2012) ànd have announced Nick’s new album Lysergiafor “sometime in 2012”. Unclear when & whether that will appear on lp / cd but the cassette edition on Burger has already sold out, apparently. Update #2: Mr Nicely will perform at the Wastelands festival at Dok, Ghent (Belgium) on 2012-08-11 (18:30 CET).

duncan browne’s debut

Media_httpwwwcovershu_qvnhs

Duncan Browne’s debut lp on Immediate (1968) had already been reissued by Sanctuary in 2000; now it’s been reissued by Grapefruit (via Cherry Red, 2010). It sounds a lot more pastoral (hi there Nick Drake fans) than his later work (hi there Ian Gomm fans).

le beat bespok√© 4

Media_httpstaticletsb_blkcb

Pissholes in the snow, Eric? Circle will be rereleasing the first volume of “Le Beat Bespoké” (v/a, originally released on Sanctuary in 2004). These tracks, however, are off the brand new fourth volume (which has got an ugly sleeve that doesn’t parody Get Carteras cleverly) …
