from beasley street to beasley boulevard

The making of Beasley Street (1978) by John Cooper Clarke has just been described by Graeme Thomson in Uncut magazine Take 185 (“October 2012” but actually released 2012-09 – silly Britons), p. 56-58. The original studio recorded version of his poem can be found on JCC’s 1980 lp Snap, Crackle [&] Bop. on Epic, which was written, played, arranged & produced by the Cheese Nightmares aka the Invisible Girls (Martin ‘ZeroHannett & Steve Hopkins), ably assisted by Lynn Oakey, Pete Shelley, Trevor Spencer, Paul Burgess, Karl Burns, Toby, Dave Hassell, Stephanie Formula … and Vinni Reilly aka the Durutti Column! In 2008, Mr. Cooper Clarke wrote a sequel for BBC Radio 4’s Bespoken wordshow, viz. Beasley Boulevard“.

russell joyce & syd mills & barrett james’ golden hair

    Media_httpwwwtokafico_qdheg

Russell Mills recorded this James Joyce poem (from 1907’s Chamber Music”, untitled poem V) with top lass Clodagh Simonds of Mellow Candle and of Fovea Hex, for his album “Undark Two: Pearl + Umbra” (1999). Syd Barrett had already recorded it somewhere in 1968-1969, for his brilliantly titled debut “The Madcap Laughs” (Harvest 1970), an lp which saw members of Soft Machine, Humble Pie and Jokers Wild contribute. More on Russell Mills here + in a future post …

    ivor cutler’s colours are brighter

    Media_httpcdn7staticc_weddf

The Ivor Cutler Trio off the Colours Are Brighter (Songs For Children And Grown Ups Too)v/a cd on Rough Trade (RTRADCD358, 2006-10-16). “All profits and artist royalties from this record are being donated to the Save the Children charity for their Rewrite the Future campaign.” Well, actually, “Mud” was first released on the Ludolp (Parlophone 1967, prod. George Martin) but a good cause deserves your attention anytime, no? Especially if it also features these fine tracks by Belle and Sebastian, and Jonathan Richman.
