im mr skin

RIP Ed Cassidy (1923-05-04 > 2012-12-06), drummer of Spirit … and IM Randy California (1951-02-20 > 1997-01-02) and John Locke (1943-09-25 > 2006-08-04). Cassidy was instantly recognizable by his shaven head (hence his nicknameMr Skin“) and his fondness for wearing black. He was around twenty years older than the rest of the group (born in 1923). His earlier career was primarily in jazz and included stints with Cannonball Adderley, Gerry Mulligan, Roland Kirk, Thelonious Monk and Lee Konitz. He was a founding member of Rising Sons with Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder.” Quoted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_%28band%29

solis lacus

Yeah! After the Cos, Mad Unity and Plus reprints, here’s yet another Placebo related reissue! This time around Heavenly Sweetness (see our Raphaël post earlier on) have reissued Michel Herr’s untitled debut with Solis Lacus (1975, EMI Belgium “Best Seller” 4C062 96949). A Mad Unity production by Pierre Pletinckx, recorded at Madeleine in Brussels with Bruno Castellucci, Robert Jeanne, Nick Kletchkovsky, Richard Rousselet and Felix Simtaine … it’s top – just check “Utopic cities” (above) and “Sea of tranquility” (below)!

beefheart’s dust sucker of a bat chain puller

= 1980 French tv (“Chorus”) … 2012-02-22: Vaulternative / Zappa records have finally released the original 1976 “Bat Chain Puller” album by Captain Beefheart. Officially. It’s outrageously expensive but it sounds much, much better than the unofficial “Dust Sucker” release by the Ozit leeches, said to contain the 1976 recordings as well, well … The title track’s rhythm is said to be based on the sound of Don Van Vliet’s Volvo car’s windscreen wipers. And the blues, of course. Webcore, webcore.

sweetnighter report

Hurray! One of my a favourite records ever gets a reprint: Sweetnighterby Weather Report. Ideal for the car stereo, too, but I fear this Music on Vinyl reissue won’t be of help there, since MoV don’t include download codes. Boo hoo!

ccpp

Two tracks off the “CCPP” album (Flamophone 1975) by France’s finest: André Ceccarelli (drums, percussion), Marc Chantereau (keyboards), Christian Padovan (bass) and Slim Pezin (guitars). Reissued by Vadim on lp and cd in 2011, cf. http://www.vadimmusic.com/fiche.php?id=475

esther’s version

Etta James’ 1973 original on Chess was pretty great – see http://uzine.posterous.com/james-etta – but Esther Phillips’ 1976 remake on Kudu (~ CTI) is the best take, imho! It’s been reissued on cd by Sony in 2010 – see also http://jazzstation-oblogdearnaldodesouteiros.blogspot.com/2010/03/esther-phillips-capricorn-princess-to.html
