spacey svensk italo

ann cacciapaglia & roberto steel

Ann Steel was masterminded by Roberto Cacciapaglia. They recorded an untitled lp in 1979 (dedicated to the life and work of Guglielmo Marconi), of which My timewas pulled as a single … and covered by Telex in 1980, on their Neurovisionlp (both the English and the French version). Later on they released the disappointing Media7″ (1980, not on the original lp, bonus on the way too expensive cd via Recording Arts). Half Machine have reissued the lp (HMR020) on 2011-10-24 … by hipster demand, I’m sure ;-)

kahlua caramba

AteqAliuqetsoundway

Disarming really, how the Champs, after scoring a hit with their first release named TequilaSoundway will be releasing two more versions on 2011-12-05 … quite different from 1982’s italo version by Bo Boss. Sources for the tracks below:

mah na mah na dat bip bippadotta

Piero Umiliani‘s classic track (1968), as made famous by David Mahna MacKay (in 1969 – more on him in the next post), Sesame Street (1969), Sesamstraße (?) and, last but not least, the Muppets (e.g. 1976) … Apparently, Jim Henson c.s. have recorded several versions, most of them by the character Bip Bippadotta … but Sandra Bullock did her part too – see http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Mahna_Mahna_(song) for more on all that!

italo funk experience

Media_httpwwwimcdborg_bzlqv

A Goblink Floyd ripoff or other Oldfieldesque exorcism + a few other gems off the (Big Bang Present) Italian Funk Experience (Synth Funk, Italo-Exploitation & Espresso-Jazz From Italy 1969-1980) v/a cd. Mostly filled with Italian library, it’s not as exquisite as the French volume, sadly. Also just out in Nascente‘s half-a-midprice Funk Experienceseries: (DJ Andy Smith & Keith Lawrence Present) Jamaican Funk Experience (Rude-Boy Riddims, Skanking Horns & Boss Reggae) – similarly great but not grandiose.

danza meccanica

Whilst we wait for volume 2, here’s two tracks off 2010’s “Danza Meccanica Italian Synth Wave 1982-1987” v/a cd on Mannequin (MNQ 005) / In the Night Time (NT 012). Standout track “Behind the door” by Victrola is a home studio recording from 1985, previously unreleased until it became a bonus track on the cd edition, which features three tracks not on the 2lp version.

flash! flash! flash!

FlashFrn81779630579344734852duke_of_burlington_fR-457648-1144455488

The original of Flash” is by the Duke of Burlington (pseudonym of Mario Battaini) and dates from 1969 (as released on Signal / Saar). The Tony Carrasco produced Italo remake on Proto dates from 1983. Val Merrall‘s cover version was recorded between 1970 and 1974 somewhere. It’s on theGypsy Creams & Ginger Nuts – Sounds That Swept The Supermarkets (The Redifunk Of Rediffusion) (Mood Mosaic Volume Ten)” v/a cd on RPM (2007, cat. no. 328).
