Utopia‘s Jean-Yves Labat recorded his proggy eh froggy solo lp for Bearsville as M. Frog in 1973-05 with Todd Rundgren, John Holbrook, John Simon, June Millington, Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, Paul Butterfield and many more … it’s finally out on cd via Edsel (2012-02, EDSS 1064) on a split cd with Roger Powell‘s “Air Pocket” (Bearsville 1980).

roger powell’s air pocket

Album-air-pocketM-frog-powell

Some solo work by Utopia keyboardist Roger Powell in the vein of Steve Hillage solo, foreshadowing Ozric Tentacles … The “Air Pocket” lp (Bearsville 1980) has been reissued by Edsel (2012-02, EDSS 1064) on a split cd with M. Frog, with a so-so single only bonus track. “Lunar plexus” is the highlight.

motherlight

MotherlightMothMcdb

Mike Bobak, Andy Jons & Wil Malone recorded Motherlightfor the Morgan Blue Town label, who released the album in 1969. Since, the trio has been known as Motherlight … Really like their – typically 1969 – cross between psychedelia and early, primordial prog …

rip reg king of the action

RIP Reg King (1945-02-05 > 2010-10-08), blue eyed soul master aka the singer of the Action, the Boys and a few other bands. Bonus track (off the Fading Yellow Vol. 3″ v/a cd): Eddie Hodges‘ original version of “Shadows and reflections”, as produced by Ed Cobb. (The Action were produced by the slightly more legendary George Martin.) Versions by Byzantine Empire and by the Lownly Crowde also exist. I’ll keep on holding on“, meanwhile, is originally by the Marvelettes (1965) – but isn’t the Action’s version almost as majestic?

syl johnson !

Syl_johnson_fullSyl_johnson

A soul genius that has been eclipsed a bit by Al Green, but still a master in his own right, sounding halfway between James Brown and Marvin Gaye. His releases on Hi (as produced by Willie Mitchell) are his most famous records, but his earlier work is just as beguiling, especially the Is It Because I’m Blacklp (1970). As such, Numero’s Complete Mythologybox set is an utter bargain. And so is the 2cd on Edsel / Demon (HEXD 51, 2000), actually. Most albums have been reprinted on vinyl.
