bish bosch man

Scott Engel (Walker) has a new track! Two actually! And soon (2012-12-04) there’s his new album! Simple cd or double lp with free cd … incorporating the video. And what not. Clever 4AD merchandising. Pushing sales from advanced and regular markets. Ah, fans. But it’s the music we’re curious for. You can listen to a second track at http://pitchfork.com/news/48512-listen-to-two-tracks-from-scott-walkers-new-album/ while you digest this must read interview : http://thequietus.com/articles/10908-scott-walker-interview

dave tompkins & hip hop

“When Russell Simmons first heard It’s yourson the radio, his mind was blown by T La Rock‘s “40-letter words.” He immediately sought out the song’s producer, Rick Rubinaka “Flip Loogan” … from the incomparable nay mighty Dave Tompkins‘ review of “Def Jam Recordings: the first 25 years of the last great record label” by Bill Adler, Dan Charnas et al. (Rizzoli 2011-10-11, ISBN 9780847833719). Do check Tompkins‘ Pulitzer on steroids Miami bass history too! gary wilson

A genius he is not and the documentary is tedious(ly long, to the point of exhausting the original fresh impression,) but the music on (the cd reissue of) Gary Wilson’s 33’52” debut lp and lone masterpiece You Think You Really Know Me(1977) feels just right … precursing new wave à la Ric Ocasek fronting Steely Dan with a young David Lynch behind the controls, desperately trying to invent Devo’s sound … or Jonathan Richman recording a blue eyed soul album for Todd Rundgren, the two of them keen to eclipse Joe Jackson but confounding him with Frank Zappa … Well just listen for yourself, but beware YT also features later ànd earlier recordings. It’s too bad Plexifilm’s two disc set (dvd + cd) is the only way you can purchase this fresh and original underground record today; high time an affordable vinyl reprint came about! Ideally with some 1976 bonus tracks! In the original – not that awful red – sleeve!

sugar nile gang

Big Bank Hank, Master Gee & Wonder Mike aka the Sugar Hill Gang want their royalties (though some may be Chic’s, one might imagine) … Can’t wait to start reading (the paperback edition of) Nile Rodgers’ autobiography (or memoir) “Le freak (an upside down story of family, disco and destiny”, incidentally! And re: the gang’s nightmare contracts, see also Roger Paradiso’s documentary “I want my name back!” (2011).

folk for fans of kate bush

Media_httpfastmediama_mkzug

What with Kate Bush releasing her first album in many years … here’s a completely different act, viz. the Irish girl duo Clodagh Simonds & Alison O’Donnell (née Bools) of Mellow Candle! As for Kate … do check Come back Kate“, a compelling documentary (by Helena Muskens & Quirine Racké, 2007) on her cult following … the strangest of fans, really ;-)

fuh king brute force

Songwriter Stephen Friedland was involved with the Tokens before he became Brute Force. His 1967 lp I, Brute Force – Confections Of Lovehas been reissued by Bar / None last year. But he’s most famous for his King of Fuh single from 1969, one of Apple‘s rarest releases.
