daan’s belgium

What with Daan Stuyven’s “Het België van” documentary on VPRO (2012) getting praise, it’s time to dust off Didier Verbeek’s 2004 documentary for RTBf tv. It’s wonderful, and it’s also available on der Daan‘s Cameradvd + cd (2006-06). Below’s a link to the 2009 Belpop documentary on VRT (Canvas) as well. Let’s hope the VRT won’t move the link (from the Canvas site to the Cobra site) to yet another site. (VRT urgently needs to rethink its ramshackle online policy.) 2013-02-02 update: it’s out on VPRO dvd cf. http://winkel.vpro.nl/het-belgie-van

the long goodbye

The soundtrack of The Long Goodbyefeatures two songs, Hooray for Hollywoodand the eponymous The long goodbye“, composed by John Williams and Johnny Mercer. It was Altman’s idea to have every occurrence of that song arranged differently, from hippie chant, to supermarket muzak, to radio music, effectively achieving the correct mood for the hero’s encounters with eccentric Californians, while pursuing his case.

Quote source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Goodbye_(film)#Soundtrack … Do hope someone will finally release or reissue the soundtrack to Robert Altman’s “The Long Goodbye” (1973) properly, in full, with all versions. Haven’t ever seen it on lp or cd, and haven’t met or read anyone who has … though Varèse Sarabande apparently featured a number of tracks at the end of their limited edition cd reissue of Fitzwilly in 2004. 2012-03-07 minny pops go ultra in brussels

Dutch wave is hip again, and especially the Minny Pops band and the Vinyl magazine are back in the spotlight … Gigs going on, and more to come, I’m sure. What I’m hoping for most of all, though, is a compilation of all those Vinyl flexies – cf. http://www.discogs.com/label/Vinyl%20Magazine! [Tnx DD!]

dropped in unconditionally

Yes, the Big Lebowski classic … bùt do note: the original version is by Jerry Lee Lewis, off his Soul My Waylp (1967)! Mickey Newbury didn’t release his own version of his song (a Jimi Hendrix favourite) until his 1968 debut Harlequin Melodies“. The First Edition‘s version (featuring Kenny Rogers) is from the same year. Bettye LaVette‘s wonderful cover version (1969) of Just dropped in (to see what condition my condition was in)can be found on Trikont‘s first Dirty Laundry – The Soul Of Black Country(US-0333, 2000) v/a comp … whilst Sharon Jones’ version (with the Dap Kings) dates dates from 2002 or 2004. Carcass frontman Jeff Walker’s cuntry metal version dates from 2006, Supergrass’ Condition is off 1995’s Alright / Timesingle, and die Haut‘s is off 1988’s Headless Body In Topless Barlp and features Nick Cave. Got that?
