mati klarwein’s orphan fairytale

Orphan Fairytale has a new album on Blackest Rainbow: “Comets Come Alive” (2012-09-10). The video for “Meteor shower” (made or merely oploaded by one BurningHaze70) features “Saint-John” (1962, part 3/5) by Mati Klarwein – which was previously used as sleeve art by Jerry Garcia & Howard Wales (1970) and Jam & Spoon (1997).

time of the season

Media_httpwwwmarmalad_vswai

Rod Argent wrote Time of the seasonfor the Zombies in 1967. Here’s an alternate mix, a 1968 Date USA promo jingle, some Kenny Everett zaniness broadcast 1968-04 on the BBC, and a live version from 1974. As for cover versions, see my next post

brother ray

Hats off to brother Ray Charles (1930-2004), y’all! I was – once again – blown away by Mr. Charles’ genius ànd life story on the occasion of seeing Ray Charles America(Alexis Spraic 2010). Still, I’m in two minds about Mr. Charles’ cover version of John Lennon’s “Imagine” … which was recorded for a tv commercial about a French bank, incidentally.

commy gun

Machine gun“, the Commodores’ debut single from the likewise-titled lp, was a rollicking Milan Williams-penned instrumental reminiscent of Billy Preston’s Outta-space“. Label chief Berry Gordy was so captivated by the pulsating clarinet that he came up with the track‘s title upon hearing it. […] It was an absolute smash in Nigeria, where the national tv and radio stations would play the track after the national anthem at the close of each broadcast day” (Steven Ivory in the liner notes to “The Ultimate Collection” on Motown, 1997). Didn’t find any confirmation for this Nigerian broadcast close info on the internet yet.

happy eleven y’all !

Eleven! Time zonesis one of thé utterly superior slices of cut ‘n’ paste radio taping montage ever. It’s off the Escape From Noise lp (SST 1987) by Negativland, thé masters at the media reappropriation craft. Ten years later, after the break i.e., their Truth in advertisingsingle (Eerie Materials, 1997) would set another standard.
