Tonight at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Linda Perhacs will be interviewed at 18 o’clock CET and will perform at 21:30 – mostly from her new album The soul of all natural things, to be released 2014-01. Below’s a reprint of our 2003-11 review of her legendary debut Parallelograms (Kapp 1970). Almost ten years old to the day, it’s from [uzine 03.17]. Since the switch of this blog from Posterous to WordPress we’re no longer able to offer you a zip of the e-zine back catalogue but we’re working on it! Meanwhile, here’s a sample issue and the table of contents … Since that 2003 review, the album has been re-reissued a number of times, e.g. on cd and lp by Sunbeam (with exclusive bonus tracks) or vinyl only by Sundazed. The Mexican Summer and Guerssen editions seem to be out of print.

Sweet, naively introverted and sometimes eerie – and always on the right side of twee. Very lovely and delightful, but not always as unique as some hypers would have you believe either. Linda reminds less of Vashti than of Joni and of Jacqui, sometimes even of Judy and Joan and Sandy and Carole and Karen. And Hope. Fans of “Willow song” on the soundtrack of “The Wicker Man” (cf. U0226) and of acts such as Mellow Candle, Tudor Lodge or even the Carpenters will like this too, while I’m even tempted to draw a parallel with Fred Neil, though not in sound. But a sweet, contemplative, Californialbion Joni trying to please Burt Bacharach comes closest, I guess. (Incidentally: ms Perhacs used to live in Topanga Canyon and in the Pacific Northwest of the USA – that whole ‘Hawaiian maiden’ story is untrue.) The cd adds five bonus tracks to the 1970 lp, the Korean lp reissue only two of them. The cd-only tracks (viz. a longer version of “Hey, who really cares” with added intro, a demo of “If you were my man”, a demo of “Chimacum rain” with extra sounds and a spoken note to her producer Leonard Rosenman) are worthwhile, but not crucial, so if you’d rather go for that poster… Note too that there’s been an earlier reissue on Ace of Discs which was mastered from a mint vinyl copy of the original lp but with a sound that wasn’t as close to the sound of the quarter track reel to reel tapes that have been used this time around, as the original lp had apparently been poorly mastered. And do note, as well, that this the WP brings together *everything* which ms. Perhacs has ever recorded. [Bunyan, Mitchell, McShee, Collins, Baez, Denny, King, Carpenter, Sandoval.]

See young George Smits act inCash? Cash!by Paul Collet and Pierre Drouot (Antwerp, Belgium, 1967) … now out on dvd via Belfilm (2011) with the soundtrack by Roger Morès (original vinyl on Vogue) extra on cd (27’43”). Fuzzy  groovy title track“Cash-cash” was co-written by Roger Morès and Roel Van Bambost (without Miek); all other tracks – e.g. “Dancing” – were written by Morès. Two tracks for the next (sixth) Beat Bespokév/a compilation, oh New Untouchables? (Volume five, once again compiled by Rob Bailey, has just been released on Circle, cat. no. CPWC113.)

“James Brown backup singer Marva Whitney discovered that the separation of church and funk was a distinction of tapping from the toe or heel, respectively. “Because tapping from the heel moves your ass” observes RJ Smith. The heel also required a frequent change of socks. One drummer recalls hearing the aquatic squoosh of the JB’s’ footsteps when the band walked offstage every night. A good foot was a sweaty foot. According to the author, Cold Sweatwas “the first hit song about perspiration. […] Nobody had ever thought to sing about an uncomfortable ferment of the body caused by the nearness of other-flesh.” A press release pinpoints how many freshly laundered shirts James Brown would burn through in a single year, while The Onedetermines the first time he cried “Give the drummer some” (May 1967, Cincinnati).” What are you doing, Dave? You’ve just convinced me to purchase RJ Smith’s The one: the life and music of James Brown(Gotham / Penguin 2012-03-15, ISBN 9781592406579)! “Back home, as the Nixon administration pushed its dubious Soul Initiative to rally African American support, Nixon backer James Brown received letters from black soldiers lamenting the absence of soul music on Armed Forces Radio. An owner of several stations himself (good for airplay), the Godfather rectified the situation by bringing the JB’s to Vietnam for a USO tour. “We didn’t do like Bob Hopehe’d say. “We went back there where the lizards wore guns.” While James Brown did the cape act to a backdrop of machine gun patter, Bob Young, future mayor of Augusta, Georgia, was flying a helicopter with the words Mother Popcornscrawled on his helmet. (In the James Brown popcornography, mother was an honorific for a large rear end.) According to Smith, the mere act of federal marshall James Palmer keeping drummer Clyde Stubblefield out of the draft and seated in the JB’s “counts as one of the great unsung patriotic acts of the era”.”
