muscle shoals’ fame studios

Famestudios

After 2008’s magnificent Take Me To The River: A Southern Soul Story 1961-1977″ 3cd v/a compilation (KENTBOX10) – a must in any collection – Kent come up trumps again with The Fame Studio Story 1961-1973 Home Of The Muscle Shoals Sound(KENTBOX12 v/a 3cd, 2011-11). Not an unmistakeable classic, this time around, but filled to the brim with magnificent soul all the same. And quite a few groovy numbers, as you can witness here. It also features Bobby Marchan’s “Funny style” – hear it & read more on him here (in a future post). Meanwhile, for more on the Florence Alabama Music Enterprises over at Muscle Shoals:

rip jerry leiber

Leiber_stoller_hound_dogLavern_baker_oui_patron6941

Almost forgot to publish this after I’d announced that I’d post some more on Leiber & Stoller & Spark records, but now with the sad news of Mr Leiber‘s parting … here’s a reminder of some of Leiber & Stoller‘s brilliant producing & songwriting skills, and of that exquisite autobiography by Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller with David Ritz: Hound dog – the Leiber & Stoller autobiography(Simon & Schuster 2009-06, ISBN 9781416559382). At the publisher’s site, you can browse the book … may I suggest reading Randy Poe’s appendix, where he argues (convincingly) that L&S practically invented rock ‘n’ roll? (And keep an eye out for more on their magic partnership – it’s like Tex Avery making music – with the Coasters in a future post.)

jobim by night

Not really a mashup but an excellent pairing of “Insensatez” by Stan Getz and Luiz Bonfá (with vocals by Maria Helena Toledo) and some of the (near) final scenes of Michelangelo Antonioni’s “La notte” (which has a great jazz club track on the soundtrack, incidentally) featuring Marcello Mastroianni, Jeanne Moreau and Monica Vitti. a 4th cellarful of motown

Cellarfulmotown4Tamlamotownlogo

Utterly wonderful tracks by Holland & Dozier (sung by LaBrenda Ben), by the Monitors (lead vocals by Sandra Fagin) and by the Temptations, and a track to puzzle fans of Edwyn Collins by Robert Dobyne of the Artistics … all off a hard to find v/a 2cd with a hard to read (because badly designed) booklet. Speaking of hard to swallow: don’t you just hate it when labels don’t update their sites? How they don’t even know how to keep a site going that simply lists their catalogue (Blue Note, EMI, Universal …) even if they have all the money in the world? The worst is Universal UK, which redirects you to this impractical nonsense … or just keeps you hangin’ on … Do they think we’re children or whàt!? Just try to find any info on this fourth volume on any of the Universal sites! Worst of all is the url printed on previous volumes of “A Cellarful Of Motown” – where the least Universal UK could do is update the site for those people who come across an old 2cd of a mere couple of years ago and want to learn about newer volumes. Aw, it’s plain awful salesmanship. Anyhoo, this is all I found … a good thing there’s fan fed sites such as Discogs!

beatles x-mas rex

Beatleschristmas1966Beatle-1967chChazxmas001

The lighter side of Christmas: the Beatles and their proto nay plain psychedelic pantomimes … with the radio comedy & novelty talents of Sir George Henry Martin CBE strongly on display, obviously. Indeed, the Beatles had been impressed by Martin’s work with Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Peter Cook and other Goons before they’d even met, while on the day of their first meeting, the Liverpudlians’ jokes and comic wordplay actually charmed Martin into thinking that he should sign them to a contract for their wit alone.
