A soul genius that has been eclipsed a bit by Al Green, but still a master in his own right, sounding halfway between James Brown and Marvin Gaye. His releases on Hi (as produced by Willie Mitchell) are his most famous records, but his earlier work is just as beguiling, especially the “Is It Because I’m Black” lp (1970). As such, Numero’s “Complete Mythology” box set is an utter bargain. And so is the 2cd on Edsel / Demon (HEXD 51, 2000), actually. Most albums have been reprinted on vinyl.
