randy songwriter / brill building book

Just out: a second collection of songs Mr. Randy Newman wrote for others, before he embarked upon his solo career. “Illinois” – hello Sufjan fans – is off the Everly BrothersRoots lp (1968), “Cowboy” is off Harry Nilsson‘s Nilsson Sings Newmanalbum (1970). Both songs are now compiled on the Bless You California – More Early Songs Of Randy Newmanv/a cd (cat. no. CDCHD 1240), a follow-up volume to On Vine Street – The Early Songs Of Randy Newman (2008, CDCHD 1186) in their producer / writer series

Both cd’s are out on Ace, one of the UK’s finest reissue labels. If you’d like to learn more on Ace, you can of course visit their website, but there’s also a book about the label by David Stubbs, published by Black Dog Publishing (2007, ISBN13: 9781906155032). See also:

& whilst on the subject of books and singer / songwriters / producers and the like, here’s some truly essential reading:Always Magic In The Air: the Bomp and Brilliance of the Brill Building Eraby Ken Emerson (2005). The US edition (Viking, ISBN 0670034568) is out of print, but the UK edition (4th Estate, 2006-03, ISBN 9781841157283) may still be available. For an appreciation, scroll to Frank Young’s review on http://www.spectropop.com/recommends/index2006.htm

Finally, a note on that producer / writer series: sadly the Ace site’s ‘7695’ link doesn’t give a complete listing yet, as there are Berns, Leiber & Stoller and Pomus & Shuman v/a compilations too – but as yet they remain unmentioned ‘as part of the series’.
