closing the cycle / beefheart books & verlaine

“Love lies” is off “Shiny Beast” and in a different version on Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band’s “Dichotomy (Rarities, Out-Takes & Demos From The ’60s & ’70s)” cd (Ozit 8003). Hey and Drumbo (John French) has just published a Beefheart book via Proper, viz. “Beefheart: through the eyes of magic” (ISBN 9780956121219), cf. http://www.propermusic.com/products.asp?recnumber=816 ! In 1998, we’d already welcomed “Lunar notes” by Zoot Horn Rollo (Bill Harkleroad) (ISBN 0946719217): http://www.afka.net/Books/lunar.htm + http://www.safpublishing.com/store/pages/html/saf_alt.html (see also U0217+U0223 for a review of his solo cd and an interview). And while you’re at it, check Mike Barnes’ book too (ISBN 9780711941342 – good luck finding it on http://www.omnibuspress.com/ – a very lousy site!) … and loads more via http://www.freewebs.com/teejo/suction/suction.html#books + http://www.beefheart.com/ !
Note: interview with John French (ànd with Sly Stone) in the current issue of Mojo!

Bonus – we now close the book on Valentine for one year:

Watching the curtains tremble,
Time trickling away,
On a bright and freezing afternoon.
I remember oh so well
The sweetness in your voice,
When you said “I belong to you,
Honey I do”.
You know I gotta say to myself,
“O foolish heart, silly thing,
You hear any old tune and you sing,
You sing…”
Seasons pass…
It’s so quiet, I hear the raindrops
Splashing on the leaves
Somehow it brings your face to mine.
And the tapping of a branch
On my window pane,
Somehow it’s ravaging my sense of time,
My sense of time…
I gotta say to myself,
“O foolish heart, silly thing,
You hear any old tune and you sing,
You sing…”

From: “O foolish heart”, Tom Verlaine, 1984, (Coverlp). Not yet on YouTube …
